Leamington shops warned to beware of Christmas thieves

THIEVES will be looking to shops and businesses in and around Leamington for extra Christmas presents this week, police are warning.

Officers are urging shop managers to bank their cash regularly rather than wait until closing time - when thieves and robbers often strike.

Staff are also urged to keep handbags and mobiles locked or hidden out of sight.

Shops selling high value goods such as jewellery are advised to appoint door staff to screen people going in and out.

Businesses closing over the Christmas period should not leave cash on the premises and leave till drawers open so potential thieves can see there is nothing to steal.

All doors and windows should be locked and spare keys kept away from the premises, while deliveries should be cancelled during the holiday period.

If possible, someone should visit the premises to move post from view.

George Stepney, crime prevention manager at Warwickshire Police, said: “Thieves know that many businesses will be empty during the festive season. By following this advice, you can help to protect your property and belongings.”
