Leamington theatre school gets Big Lottery boost

UNDERPRIVILEGED young people with an interest in performing arts will benefit from a lottery grant which has been given to a Leamington theatre school.

Teatro, which was set up in January, has been given almost £10,000 by the Big Lottery to fund work with up to 15 young people aged from 16 to their 20s who would not normally have access to the expertise the school can provide.

The money will pay for tutors in dance, singing and acting who will take free weekly classes at one of the school’s hired studios.

Alan Gill, the school’s principal and artistic director who has more than 30 years of theatre experience, said: “It’s a difficult time for our young people given the state of the economy.

“The project will create opportunities for the youth of Leamington Spa to show that they are creative and talented individuals.

“If we can channel their energies away from negative activities to something life changing then the whole community will benefit.”

Both experienced foster carers, Mr Gill and his partner Lizzi Cross have strong contacts with social services which will help them to find the right candidates.

Miss Cross, the school’s administrator, said the classes would not just benefit students on an artistic level but they could also enhance their job prospects, improve their life skills and boost their self esteem.

She added: “We also have good connections with the early intervention service in Warwickshire and they will be looking to get out to those kids who can benefit from us and our classes.

“We want to get out to the youth clubs and the places where we know there are young people who want to do it because in the end they have to want it.”

The classes are due to start in October and will run for 30 weeks, in which time Teatro will seek further funding to continue the work.

Teatro is also hoping to recruit volunteer mentors to work alongside the students.

Miss Cross said: “It’s about finding the right people who can gain respect and understand the issues the young people have.”
