Lewis Carroll inspired project for disadvantaged youngsters

LEWIS Carroll’s classic tale Alice in Wonderland will be retold by a group of young actors from disadvantaged backgrounds thanks to a lottery-funded project.

Funded by the National Lottery, Warwickshire County Council and Warwick District Council, Teatro theatre school in Leamington has taken Carroll’s original story as a starting point for a group of 20 young people to develop their creativity, confidence and self belief.

The group’s production, Curiouser - A journey of discovery, will use music, dance, storytelling, improvisation and magical imagery to showcase all of the new skills they have learned during the project.

Alan Gill, Teatro’s artistic director, said: “We started the process back in October building confidence, tackling low self-esteem and showing young people that performing can be really fun.

“Working every Tuesday at Bath Place Community Venture we have devised a show with the young people that will display all their latent skills and enable them to find a voice.

“The theatre is a great catalyst for change, and the Curiouser project has been a really great experience for them and us.”

The actors come from areas in Leamington, Warwick and Coventry and are all striving to do something different with their lives.

Performances will take place at the Spa Centre on Saturday April 14 and Sunday April 15 at 2.30pm and 5pm.
