Lightning strike hit village house

The lightning strike took place in New Street during the thunder storm on Saturday afternoon.

No visible damage appears to have been caused to the property but BT Openreach engineers were carrying out repairs in and around the road on Monday.

Fiona Sciolti contacted the Courier to say her parents Mary and Claudio, who live in New Street, had been affected by the strike.

She said: “There was a massive white light and all of the phone lines were blown out.

“A lot of houses were without phone lines and the internet.

“Getting the providers to do anything about it has proven to be difficult.”

New Street residents have had to cope with far worse over the years as the road was one of those badly affected when Cubbington was flooded in 2007.

Work on a new flood water alleviation scheme near the Thwaites Factory started recently and other preventative measures have been taken and added over time.

Earlier this week forecasters predicted there will be more heavy rain and gale force winds from today (Friday) which could lead to further flooding across Britain.

The Environment Agency has issued 135 flood alerts, including for the River Leam, and 14 more serious warnings.
