Lorry blaze closes M40 in Warwickshire

THE M40’s northbound carriageway was temporarily closed on Thursday afternoon (March 17) after a heavy goods vehicle caught fire on the hard shoulder.

Firefighters were called to the stricken lorry between junctions 12 and 13 at 2.20pm.

With the cab described as ‘“well alight”, crews from Southam and Fenny Compton fire stations worked at the scene for more than two hours using a breathing apparatus, ladders and a water bowser from Leamington.

An environmental protection unit was called in when it was realised diesel was leaking from the vehicle. Some 50 to 60 litres flowed into drains on the hard shoulder.

Two lanes were reopened at around 3pm. Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service reported closing the incident at 4.26pm.
