Map of olde worlde Warwickshire

AFTER being on loan to the British Museum, a huge tapestry has gone on show at the Warwickshire Museum in Market Hall, Warwick.

The tapestry, which dates back to 1588, is a map of the whole of the county and includes some intriguing Elizabethan, non-standard spellings of well-known towns and villages, including Warwicke, Lemmington, Kenelmworth, Sowtham, Woodlow and Whitnish.

Maggie Wood, the museum’s keeper of social history, who left her job this week, said: “The tapestry was one of four commissioned by Raphe Sheldon for his new home, Weston House, near Shipston-on-Stour, and has been on loan to the British Museum as part of their Shakespeare Staging the World exhibition.”
