Mayor is special guest at school

Rugby Mayor Sally Bragg gave a talk about local government and council services when she visited Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College.

She was a special guest as part of the school’s promotion of democracy, which is one of the fundamental British values identified by the Department of Education.

In the special assembly, Cllr Bragg spoke to more than 200 Year 9 students about her role as mayor and explained the services provided by Rugby Borough Council.

They also learned about the history of the borough, Rugby’s coat of arms and about the robes, chain and mace used by the mayor on ceremonial occasions.

Cllr Bragg told the students about some of her mayoral duties which include listening to local residents, campaigning on local issues and chairing council meetings.

The students heard about the variety of events that Cllr Bragg has attended in her capacity as mayor such as: a garden party at Buckingham Palace, the annual Wroth Silver ceremony and her own mayor making.
