Meg’s an inspiration to fellow classmates

MEG Cubitt is among the nominations for the Young Citizen of the Year award.

Meg, aged 15, was born with Turner Syndrome - a rare chromosomal disorder that only affects girls - and she also has a separate condition, called idiopathic intracranial hypertension, which causes fluid on the brain.

However this has not stopped the Kingsley School pupil from living as full and normal life as possible and raising thousands of pounds for charity.

Meg was nominated by Alison Radley, who said: “Meg has raised thousands of pounds for other people with the same condition and is Teen Representative for the Turner Syndrome Support Society, representing the UK.

“She regularly has to be admitted to hospital for tests and procedures as part of the ongoing treatment of her condition and attends Kingsley despite often suffering severe headaches. She never complains and is always cheerful.

“She is an inspiration to her fellow Kingsley students who have raised money for the Turner Syndrome charity in recognition of her courage and selfless attitude to life.”

If you know a young person who has done something extra special, be it caring for a relative, raising money for charity or helping others then you can nominate them for the Young Citizen of the Year award.

There is also still time to nominate someone for the adult Citizen of the Year competition.

Organised by the Brakes Trust and supported by the Courier/Weekly News, it aims to find the individuals most deserving of the awards. Readers are asked to nominate volunteers, unsung and unrecognised, who give their time unselfishly to make life more comfortable and more enjoyable for others.

Nominations of no more than 150 words listing the outstanding qualities of the individual must be marked “Coty” including the name, address and phone number of the sponsor and sent to news@leamington courier.co.uk or hand delivered to the Courier offices at 32 Hamilton Terrace, Leamington Spa CV32 4LY no later than Monday, March 5. Any young citizen must be no older than 16 on the closing date. You can also enter online at www. citizenoftheyear.org.uk

The Brakes Trust has chosen two local charities: the Warwickshire Young Carers Project and The Northampton and Warwickshire Air Ambulance, to be the beneficiaries of funds raised through the awards evening.

Joint sponsors of the campaign are Mask-arade, manufacturers and suppliers of personal face masks to party goers and celebrities, and EOS Energy, suppliers of solar panels; two companies that are part of the Alumet Group at Southam.

Shortlisted nominees and winners will be honoured at an awards ceremony at Leamington Town Hall on March 30.

More of a fast moving show than a formal presentation, the Citizen of the Year Gala Awards at the Town Hall on March 30 will feature those volunteers doing most for the community, and highlight four popular local acts.

Compere for the evening, Paul Crane, is amusing and professional. Lively and interesting throughout, Paul is key to the success of the whole event, putting finalists and entertainers at ease whilst adhering to a strict running order.

There was not a spare seat in the house last year and those taking part in the evening’s entertainment received a standing ovation from the packed audience. Details of this year’s performer will be announced later.

Tickets are sure to go quickly this time around.

Included in the price is a sit down buffet supper. Corporate tables for 10 people alongside the catwalk cost £250, the public £12 a ticket, and Brakes Trust members £10. They can be obtained from the Courier offices at 32 Hamilton Terrace, Leamington Spa or through www.citizenoftheyear.org.uk
