Metal thieves believed to be behind theft of village’s last post box

ELDERLY people in Weston-under-Wetherley have been left with no way of posting their mail after the village’s remaining postbox and its contents were stolen.

The small red Victorian post box was cut away from its post in Rugby Road at the junction of St Michaels Close some time between 4pm on Wednesday October 17 and 4pm on Thursday October 18.

Villagers suspect it was stolen to be sold as scrap metal.

Village hall chairman Ray Kirkwood said: “The whole village is astonished that somebody could come into a small close and do that without anybody seeing it.

“Somebody has obviously used metal cutters to cut through the metal rods which were holding it in place. We can assume they did it in the night and that it was stolen for its metal value.

“But the main thing is that we now have no post box in the village because we lost the other one when it was knocked down by a car and the Post Office did not put it back up. There’s quite a number of pensioners in St Michaels Close who relied on this one.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to this incident and to the theft of a post box in Temple Grafton near Stratford sometime between Saturday September 29 and Tuesday October 2.

Anyone with information shoudl call the crime desk on 415000.
