Molly’s wishes and butterflies are remembered on bike ride

LITTLE Molly Ollerenshaw would have been proud of her dad Tim as he sets off on a 240-mile bike ride accompanied by 40 of his friends.

The bubbly eight-year-old lost her battle with a rare kidney cancer in June last year but her spirit and fortitude will be remembered by all who knew her in Warwick.

Which is exactly why Tim and his friends - including BBC WM presenter Phil Upton - have already had £25,000 in sponsorship money pledged for the charity which was started in Molly’s name.

This morning (Fri) at least 42 riders were expected to set off from the Welsh seaside resort of Llandudno, where Molly had enjoyed so many happy family holidays, with the aim of getting back into Warwick town centre just ahead of the arrival of the Olympic torch on Sunday.

Tim, who lives in Hatton Park with his wife Rachel and their other children, Maeve, aged seven, and Ben, aged 11, hopes people will look out for their distinctive bright pink jerseys and leggings as they cycle into town.

He said: “We’re wearing pink because it’s the colour associated with cancer charities - and at least everyone will be able to see us coming.

“The charity we founded is called Molly Olly’s Wishes and through that we hope to offer support to other families of children with terminal or life-threatening illnesses.

“Many need additional help beyond what can be given by the NHS and its supporting bodies.”

Close family friend and ride organiser Duncan Coutts said: “One thing that is never really said is just how much having a terminally ill child costs the family - not only emotionally but financially as well.

“It’s hoped the Molly Olly charity can ease the financial burden and allow children and families to enjoy some quality time together.”

Phil Upton will be offering a running commentary of their three-day progress from Llandudno, with an overnight stop in Dolgellau, and then Church Stretton in Shropshire, after tackling the wearying Long Mynd.

Tim and his riders have already personalised their flamboyant jerseys with butterflies because these were Molly’s favourite creatures.

Rachel said: “As a family Llandudno has very happy memories which is why we thought it would be as good a place as any to start the ride.”
