Moore is Leamington’s new mayor

MEETING more people and representing all townspeople are the things new Leamington mayor Yvonne Moore is looking forward to in the next 12 months.

Cllr Moore, a Liberal Democrat councillor who represents the Milverton ward, was made mayor at a ceremony at Leamington town hall on Saturday - taking the chain of office from Cllr Alan Wilkinson.

Born in Jamaica, Cllr Moore has lived in England since 1958 and in Leamington since 1962.

She trained as a nurse at the former Warneford Hospital and had a long and distinguished career in the health service.

Elected as a town councillor in 2007, Cllr Moore is presently a trustee of the Warwick District Citizens Advice Bureau and is actively involved with North Leamington Neighbourhood Watch Association.

She is also a magistrate.

Cllr Moore said: “I am looking forward to meeting many of the diverse groups living in Leamington.

“Being in Leamington for 50 years you can but marvel at the ways the communities have basically integrated, obviously there are still some people who, due to ignorance and lack of understanding, are fearful of minority groups.

“I am here to represent the residents of Leamington whoever they are.”

Cllr Moore’s chosen charities for her 12 months as mayor are the African Caribbean Project, Making Space and the Alzheimer’s Society.
