Muskets raised at Civil War talk

MUSKETRY and swordplay brought the Civil War to life at a Southam history group’s first ever fundraising event last month.

Kevin Hicks of education group the History Squad dressed in 17th century costume for his talk on the English Civil Wars for the Friends of the Cardall Collection, a group dedicated to preserving a collection of artefacts and curios from the town’s past.

Mr Hicks, who lives in Bishops Itchington, revealed insights into the life and character of King Charles I and the devastating effects the battle of Edge Hill - ‘the Kineton Fight’ - and the Battle of Southam had on ordinary people in the area.

The history expert also showed a selection of Civil War armour and weapons including muskets, swords and a short pike, and ended the evening with a demonstration of musket firing.
