New flats for Myton families

Two self-contained flats complete with beds, bathrooms, living areas and even balconies will be built next to the next to the Myton Lane hospice’s inpatient unit.

The flats are being built using a £442,000 Department of Health grant to improve facilities for relatives.

The charity’s chief executive Kate Lee said: “Having a loved one at Myton can be a very distressing time and this is often made worse for families and friends who do not live locally and are faced with long journeys to and from our hospices.

“When patients are very poorly their families often don’t feel able to leave them.

“This is why it is vital for us to provide a comfortable place for them to rest, safe in the knowledge that our nursing teams will fetch them if they are needed.”

As part of the work Myton’s existing relatives’ room will be transformed into a counselling suite to provide private space for patients and families to talk to care teams.

The 20-week build is being completed by contractor Speller Metcalfe and is expected to be finished by April.

Supporters will be invited to see the new accommodation for themselves at the charity’s Summer Fete next July.

Myton also received a £90,000 Department of Health Grant to improve facilities at its Rugby Day Hospice, including a new kitchen, and the refurbishment is now complete.

The Myton Hospices touches the lives of almost 4,000 people across Coventry and Warwickshire each year through its hospices, family support services and in the community through Myton at Home.

The charity needs to raise almost £8 million each year to keep its services running.
