New improved plans unveiled for Newbold Comyn

The ambitious £5million renovation will see the public centre extended by almost 70 per cent and given a new gym amid the major upgrades.

The plans include a new sports hall to be built on the existing car park immediately outside the leisure centre.

The extension will also allow for a new open plan reception area and a ‘clip and climb’ climbing wall for children to try the sport.

The existing centre which is owned and run by Warwick District Council, would also be extended to the side to accommodate two new fitness studios and a dedicated spinning studio for cycle classes.

As well as a new 100-station gym with dedicated changing rooms, the plans include an open plan changing area to include improved disabled facilities and rooms for group or school changing, at the poolside. There will also be a new steam room and larger shower area to replace the existing disabled toilets.

The expansion will see the loss of the 18-space car park which will be moved to land on the other side of the pathway.

The upgrades will see closure of the pool for up to a month in early 2017 but council officers said they plan to never have the whole centre closed at any time.

Cllr Sue Gallagher, portfolio holder for leisure said: “The emerging improvement plans will allow our residents to enjoy a high standard of facilities now and in the future.

“Warwick District Council has a great history of investing in leisure and these proposals are further evidence of the importance the council places on sports and fitness and the huge contribution it makes.”

A total of £12million was approved by the district council for the major upgrades last year. Around £5m will go into Leamington’s improvements with £4m to be spent on necessary upgrades and maintenance between the site and St Nicholas Park in Warwick.

Work will start on both Leamington and Warwick centres this summer due for completion by the end of 2017.

From then, a private management company will come into to run the improved sites.

A public display of plans will be at Newbold from Friday January 29 to February 3.
