New Kenilworth management team to put the emphasis on youth

Wayne Goss and Richard Kay have been brought in to take charge of Town until the end of the season following the resignation of manager Gary Jones and his assistant Jason Hassam.

Goss has been involved in Warwickshire football for some time, beginning at Atherstone Town as reserve team manager before taking over as assistant manager and then manager at Nuneaton Griff.

More recently, Goss worked alongside Barry Shearsby at Southam United.

Kay is taking his first steps into the managerial side but has extensive playing experience having started his career at Nuneaton Borough and then Atherstone United before playing under Goss at both Nuneaton Griff and Southam United.

Kay is also a UEFA B-qualified coach and is building his own coaching business having worked in the sector for many years.

In making the appointments, Town secretary Matthew Sewell said: “I am delighted to have secured the services of Wayne and Richard for the football club.

“They bring a wealth of experience to the dugout and to the club as a whole.

“Although their appointment is for the remainder of this season initially, the enthusiasm they have shown in our discussions this week, both for the games to come and for our long-term aims at the club, gives me great hope that we can move forward together when we assess things again in the summer.”

Goss said the opportunity to bring through local youngsters was an important factor in himself and Kay taking on the roles.

“I’ve started to get itchy feet in recent weeks having been away from Saturday football for a season or so,” said Goss.

Kenilworth Town represents a fantastic opportunity for myself and Richard. It’s a club with a great structure.

“The people running the club share our belief that at this level it’s important that where possible we bring our own players up through the junior and youth ranks.

“And, while not excluding players from further afield, it is important to offer a good standard of football for local players.”

The duo’s managerial reign got off to a disappointing start on Saturday when Town lost 2-1 to Midland Combination Division Two leaders Littleton.

On Tuesday evening, Kenilworth bowed out at the quarter-final stage of the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup with a penalty shootout defeat to Stockingford AA after 90 minutes and extra-time had failed to produce a goal.
