A crowd of teachers and students watched as Rugby MP Mark Pawsey cut the ribbon, alongside the Mayor of Rugby Sally Bragg, and declared the centre officially open.

The building has seven classrooms, as well as an IT suite, a library, informal study hall, café, toilet blocks and a state-of-the art teaching lab.

It is next to the recently opened Expressive Arts Centre and built to the same specifications and visual style as this building.

When asked for his thoughts, head of sixth form Rupert Davies said: “I think it’s brilliant. There’s lots of new facilities the students can access and some dedicated study areas.

“I also think it’s important that they have their own identity as sixth formers, and I hope this building can give them that.”

The building of the bespoke three-storey sixth form centre became possible after the school put in a successful bid for £2.6 million from the Education Funding Agency last year.

It is hoped that the new building will help them to cater for an increasing demand for school spaces in the Rugby area.

In addition, the Sixth Form Centre will enhance opportunities and experiences for the Ashlawn Teaching School, providing specialist accommodation and resources.

MP Mark Pawsey said: “I’ve been associated with the school for a while now and have seen it grow and develop over the years.

“I was involved in the bid for the funding to build the sixth form centre and I know all of the students that are here will benefit immensely from this wonderful new facility.

“It’s a real honour for me to be here alongside the mayor in declaring the premises open today.”
