Nick Clegg commends Lillington Nursery and Primary School

Nick Clegg has given Lillington Nursery and Primary School a special commendation for its use of additional funding to help pupils from less advantaged backgrounds.

The Deputy Prime Minister had previously praised the school after he visited recently and had encouraged it to enter the Pupil Premium Awards.

Entries were judged recently and Mr Clegg wrote to headteacher Derek Fance last week to tell him that the panel of education experts, chaired by Dr Kevan Collins of the Educational Endowment Foundation, were highly impressed by the school and had selected it as one of the best entries from the West Midlands.

Mr Clegg said: “This is a wonderful testimony to the excellent work that you and your staff have been doing to boost the attainment of disadvantaged pupils through the use of the Pupil Premium.

“Among other features, the judges were impressed by your school’s commitment to investing time to respond to the needs of your pupils and their families.

“No child’s prospects in life should be held back by their circumstances and we know that educational attainment is what will help them most.

“I am absolutely determined that we will narrow attainment gaps and it is through the efforts of schools such as yours that we will do it.”

Mr Fance said the commendation was recognition of the work the school’s staff are doing not just for the children entitled to the Pupil Premium funds but for all pupils .

He said: “We are very proud of the fact we have been recognised.

“This obviously backs up everything that the staff are doing in terms of of making sure we meet all pupils’ needs.”
