No charity shown by thieves in clothes theft

A THEATRE group for young people has been left out of pocket by thieves who made off with bags of clothing which was to be sold off.

Members and supporters of the Spa Theatre Company in Leamington had been collecting the material over a period of months and built up around 24 bags of clothes to sell off by the kilo to a recycling specialist.

It would have raised up to £250 for the registered charity to go towards production and running costs.

Thieves struck last Tuesday morning when they spotted the bags in a car port in Williams Road, a cul-de-sac in Radford Semele.

Theatre group treasurer Phil Hall said: “This collection represented a significant amount in fundraising for us as the company Phil the Bag pay by weight for any bags we collect.

“It is extremely upsetting to think that our members’ hard work over the last few months has effectively come to nothing.”

Mr Hall, of Fernhill Drive, Leamington, said all the bags were colour coded and clearly marked in the bags provided by Phil the Bag.

“We reported it to the police who did not say there had been a lot of this going on in the area.

“We think it was an opportunist thief or thieves who were in the area.”

Mr Hall, who has been involved with the group for more than 25 years, 10 of them as treasurer, said: “The majority of our income comes from shows but we also have to do lots of fundraising to meet our costs.

“We are struggling for funds and this has come as a bit of a blow. Like all charities, everybody is struggling.

The group’s Spa Juniors, aged seven to 16, has just started rehearsing a production of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, which will be performed at the Bridge House Theatre, Warwick, from July 11-13.

While the seniors, aged 16 plus, will stage the Full Monty from November 12-16 at the Spa Centre.

The Spa Theatre Company was founded by Phyl Harris in 1982.

The junior section meets weekly to learn all aspects of stage craft and stage a musical every year, while the senior stage a big musical in the autumn.
