Tributes to the late Warwick district councillor Bertie Mackay

Tributes have been paid to a “highly valued and influential” member of Warwick District Council who died recently.

Cllr Bertie Mackay, who was the leader of the council’s Independent Group and represented the Stoneleigh ward, died on February 5.

He had been a member of the council since he was elected in 1999 and its chairman from 2010 to 11.

He was also a long standing member of the Local Government Association where he was vice vhairman of LGA Rural and LGA Urban Commissions from 2011 to 13.

Cllr Judy Falp, deputy leader of the Independent Group, said; “Tributes given spoke of Bertie as a thoughtful intelligent man, a great orator who fought strongly for causes he believed in, a man with deep principles.

“He was a unique character who was a tower of strength and wisdom.

“Meetings will not be the same without him.”

Cllr Andrew Mobbs, the leader of the council, said: “Councillor Mackay has been a highly valued and influential member of the council who will be sadly missed by all.

“He was also an extremely capable chairman for our planning committee.

“I always found him to be open and amiable but also forthright in his views.”

Cllr Mackay’s funeral will take place in Baginton on Wednesday February 18 at 11.30am.
