Old Leamingtonians’ fourth heroic effort

THOUSANDS of rugby players and fans enjoyed a festival of fun and sports at Old Leamingtonians RFC over the weekend.

The club hosted its fourth Rugby For Heroes event, which involved tournaments for adults and youngsters, live music, a real ale festival and services to remember fallen servicemen and women.

Profits from the festival, which are estimated to be about £6,000, will be split between Help for Heroes, The Royal British Legion and The Afghanistan Trust.

Donations will also be made to 353, the non-profit organisation set up in memory of fallen Warwick paratrooper Pte Conrad Lewis, and the scout and cadet groups who acted as marshals and litter pickers throughout the three-day event.

Mike Valance, the event’s chief organiser, said the festival had broken all records from previous years in terms of the amount of money it raised, the number of teams who took part and the number of people who attended.

Having said the festival will take place again next year, club chairman Richard Wormell said: “Old Leamingtonians are proud to be associated with such a fantastic and worthwhile event.”
