A cathedral city?

Under a wedding photograph (Courier, last week) you state that the chapel at Wroxall Abbey was “officially upgraded to a cathedral in 2009”. I don’t know what or who makes it official but I don’t think any mainstream part of the UK Christian church would recognise the chapel as a cathedral.

As everyone knows a settlement which has a cathedral is “officially” granted the status of city. So the well oiled wedding promotion machinery at the abbey will soon be welcoming us to the City of Wroxall. - Peter Mills, via email.

• Editor’s note: Wren’s Chapel was consecrated as Wren’s Cathedral on July 26 2009, by the Free Methodist Church. It is in the Diocese of Wroxhall Abbey and has an ordained bishop. The chapel is open to worship to all Christian denominations.
