A lack of standards

Today I found two broken swan or goose eggs on the path. A month ago someone murdered one of the two white geese living on the canal in Sydenham leaving the remaining goose completely distraught.

We have litter bins - yet bags, bottles and tins are left strewn around them and someone using dog poo bags regularly leaves those against the bin instead of in it. Others just don’t bother.

I have spoken to children and youths on many occasions about the litter they intend to leave but they simply argue between themselves as to who does or doesn’t own the rubbish rather than just dispose of it. I despair at the deterioration in moral standards these days and the total lack of the concept of personal responsibility in certain individuals.

I urge all parents, teachers and children to please encourage others to think twice about their impact on our environment and respect our wildlife. - Anne Piper, via email.
