A man of great wit and knowledge

I heard the news about David Barby and was shocked and saddened.

I always enjoyed watching him because of the depth of his knowledge and the impish sense of humour which he effortlessly managed to bring to the programmes.

We from Coventry Watch Museum only met him once, which was in July 2011 when we were featured on Antiques Road Trip.

Charles Hanson had been filmed visiting our museum and suggested that we attend the auction a few weeks later. to see two watches auctioned, which Charles had purchased and brought into the museum for advice.

We (myself and Paul Shufflebotham our chairman) then met up with Charles and David at the auction at Warwick antiques in Coventry.

I was filmed making a winning bid for the watches which have a prominent place in our current exhibition. We were then filmed having an amusing and entirely spontaneous conversation with Charles and David in the car park outside the auction rooms.

Unfortunately this part of the filming was not included in the final version of the programme when it was shown on BBC2 in February of this year, which was a pity because David was in great form with his wit and innuendos about Charles Hanson having made some kind of underhand arrangement with me. - Peter Naul, Company Secretary, Coventry Watch Museum Project Limited.
