All the makings of a TV farce

Those people attending the committee hearing on the granting of a licence to a sex club will have witnessed a truly distinctive occasion. It had all the makings of a wonderful TV farce called “Local democracy in action:”

* A committee deemed to represent ‘the people’.

* A chair who (perfect part for Maggie Smith) was clearly fed up with all these ‘locals’ being such a nuisance - abrupt and disdainful to the point of rudeness and miffed when more than one person pointed out that she didn’t exactly have much day-to-day experience of living in South Town and would hardly be likely to vote for the proposal if it was to be located in her own back yard (Haseley Knob) or in the ward she represents (Leek Wootton).

* A huge list of people who live locally and who were objecting in the strongest possible terms

* A large cast of local people who, given the regulations about the importance of taking local people’s opinions into account, justifiably felt that they should be listened to and that their very strong objections should be taken into account. - Bernard and Sally Davies, Leam Terrace, Leamington.
