Better sites than Green Belt for development

In 2009 the town council agreed and noted in the minutes that development to the north of the town on Green Belt was not acceptable. This announcement is typical of many other statements issued over the last 40 years that have also been noted in your newspaper.

Today, I accepted the invitation to meet with the Liberal Democrat town councillors at their surgery in Northumberland Road.

Several topics of local concern were raised but the main subject was the possible further development into the Green Belt north of Leamington. This was because of a recent announcement by Tory town councillor Doody saying that development on Green Belt north of Leamington could be acceptable.

Besides this land being Green Belt, access onto the Kenilworth Rd has presented a problem because of traffic density, This is not the case for the allotment area adjoining the arable fields. Many access points for future development have been in existence for several decades on Northumberland Road, Moss Paul Close, Borrowdale and Guys Cliffe Avenue. (Are allotments white belt or Green Belt?)

I understand that because of the vociferous and justified objections by the allotment holders the green fields are now becoming considered for development rather than the allotment area. Neither area should be developed. Would your readers or anybody else explain why the large non-arable areas between Coventry and Leamington seem to be ignored for further development?

These are:-

* Coventry Airport site. Good access, services, work areas, trunk roads and motorways nearby.

* Peugeot Citroen site, good access, services, work areas, trunk roads and motorways nearby

* Royal Showground, good access, services, trunk roads and motorways nearby (near railway too!)

Could anybody explain with more than 15 supermarkets within five miles, why we need more, rather than using this land for housing? - Philip Page, Northumberland Road, Leamington.
