Care of Old Library is down to its landlord

To imply, as last week’s anonymous writer does, that the Old Library will now be “properly cared for” by turning into luxury flats and that, by proxy, Bath Place is somehow responsible for its current state is to completely misread the situation.

For the past 13 years the building has been owned by Warwickshire College and it has therefore been their responsibility to maintain the Grade II listed property. All of the deterioration of the building occurred solely upon their watch.

As has been mentioned previously, Bath Place and a consortium of community organisations would love to have the opportunity to purchase and therefore restore the building and keep its original purpose as a public facility granted to Leamington by a philanthropic gesture.

The 1,800 signatures on the petition and the 300 objections to the planning application are also a testament to just how many people do in fact, care very deeply for the Old Library and its future.

Holly May Gallan, from the enormously talented Spires Youth Orchestra, underlines that concern most eloquently in her letter too.

After witnessing their rehearsals in the Atrium it’s indeed bewildering that destroying such a space could even be considered. - Melissa Rood, Gordon Street, Leamington.
