Change of heart over Sea Scouts home?

I have been following the continued debate over the proposed move of the Sea Scouts building to Myton Fields with interest, especially Cllr Linda Bromley’s view that it should be built elsewhere.

Her views appear to be contrary to those she expressed in a letter she signed to Warwick District Council chief executive Chris Elliott in 2007 when she was secretary of the Emscote Gardens Residents Association which stated the Sea Scouts should relocate to Myton Fields. The letters says:

“Historically there has been conflict with residents adjacent to this area because of horrendous parking problems. This was reseo;ved with the help of our local MP and we do not want this rearing its ugly head again.

“It appears an obvious solution to all the problems and needs of the Sea Scouts would be to relocate to the other side of the river (Myton Fields) where the other boat compound is at the moment. We were told that WDC are currently investigating the possibility and cost of this and we can see definite advantages to the Sea Scouts. Their needs could be satisfied on this new site and they could have access for parking etc. They would also be at less risk of flooding which is an ever-present threat at the current site. As the groups of youths which frequent the St Nicholas side of the park do not venture into the Myton Fields area, we envisage increased security for them also. At present the scout hut is a regular congregation point for large unruly groups of youths. The relocation of the hut would also remove the unsightly view the elderly face now from the adjacent residential housing and an area could be cleared of weeds here and benches provided for the elderly to unjoy the river view. It should be noted that the Sea Scouts do successfully apply for funding from grants such as the King Henry VIII Trust and we understand that they once applied for lottery funding in their own right.”
