Councillors to blame for bone of contention

It is surprising that district councillors are always getting all bothered about Warwick Racecourse regarding such things as the plans for a hotel and the rent of the land.

They could have had a much closer link with what goes on there, as there used to be a councillor appointed to the board as the council’s representative, in order to keep a close eye on things important to the town. This was, I think, in the terms of the original lease.

Because instead of making good use of such a link with a business important to Warwick some councillors only used the appointment to obtain free race tickets for their cronies, the value of the appointment was wasted when it could have been put to good use.

Finally the councillors decided that the best way to deal with the racecourse was to withdraw their appointee, and forget about it rather than attempt to improve the council’s record in that area.

Thus what should be an asset to Warwick has become a bone of contention because of the lack of interest over the years of councillors who were elected by voters to promote the interests of the town.

Perhaps councillors should look to themselves for remedies, rather than protest outside the course for a photoshoot and complain to your newspaper about it! - John Walker, Primrose Hill, Warwick
