Cut some slack to save building

Regarding the letter ‘We should welcome change for the Wantage’ from Clare and Peter James (Postbag July 13).

I support fully the views of these correspondents. I am not a neighbour of the Wantage but I am a resident keen to hold on to our heritage. Our council has yet again shot itself in the foot! With a building of this nature we should cut the developer a little slack in order to retain the building in a well maintained manner.

The issue of traffic is an irrelevance as anyone who could afford this house would probably have more than one car. There is a house in my road where every member of the family has a car – should the council ask them to move because of traffic? Of course not, it would be a preposterous idea. The Wantage could take a family of five or six who could all be car drivers. thus blowing this argument completely out of the water.

I also noticed that planning permission has been granted for houses and flats to be built on the council-owned land in Warwick Road (the old Builders Merchants), you know, that very busy main road that passes through town, no traffic problems there then!! - Sam Chrimes, St Nicholas Avenue, Kenilworth.
