Disappointed by stance over library

After reading Cllr Weber’s letter (Postbag August 12) I wonder what May’s Labour candidates in Crown thought about his comments, and the decision to only give six months funding to Lillington Library made by the Labour controlled Leamington Town Council?

In their last leaflet in Crown they said they were ‘ready and willing to fight to save local services’ and yet the first time the new Labour led town council, had the chance to support Lillington residents by voting for a Lib Dem proposal to keep the library open for an extra three hours a week for 15 months, they responded by proposing only three months funding instead. Only after a very long debate, and huge pressure from the Lib Dem group was this increased to six months.

Clearly Labour cannot be trusted. They say one thing to the electorate, and do the opposite once they are in a position to do something about it!

The Social Cohesion fund of £8,000 was set up by the Liberal Democrat group in January of this year to support local communities. After three months of Labour control this was the first proposal for spending from this fund - and for only £875 in 2011/2012.

I also proposed carrying out a review of the funding in autumn 2012 to make sure the funding was being used effectively and making a difference to the residents of north Leamington.

My fellow Lib Dem councillors and I are working hard with local groups, volunteers and the county council to keep Lillington Library open for as long as possible each week. I am very very disappointed that the town council turned down the opportunity to take a stake in the future of Lillington Library. - Cllr Sarah Boad, town and county councillor.
