Filled with pride for our NHS

It is with heartfelt appreciation that I record after a recent cataract operation under local anaesthetic at Warwick Hospital.

Contrary to expectations, this is not as straightforward as often believed. To ensure the total immobility necessary, the patient’s head is strongly taped to the operating table; the face is covered; one’s optic universe is turned vertiginously topsy-turvy; shadowy figures hover above, communicating in impenetrably technical language.

Yet I can honestly say that thanks to both the professional rigour and the human kindness demonstrated by all concerned; nursing, theatre, and reception staff included, the experience filled me with deep pride and thankfulness for our matchless NHS.
