Hands off our community centre

In response to ‘We Need Affordable Homes More’ (Postbag, February 10).

It was said that the group wanted to buy the Kingsway Centre site to replace the one which closed three years ago.

That was untrue, we have never talked about buying it as the centre belongs to us - the community.

It was built by a local gentleman named Mr Ted Billington.

So how can it be knocked down without a proper consultation with the whole of our community?

For those who don’t know about the centre, we did a survey in 2009 to find out what local residents would like to see happen to it.

The survey got a very good response with people wanting the centre to be put to good use for the whole community.

Three years later we are still waiting for a response to that survey. The next we hear is it is going to be knocked down for flats and housing.

We have had a meeting with the council who said we had to write a letter of intent, which we have sent in and at this time are waiting for a meeting with them to see how we can go forward.

The group is still going around the area to visit locals and so far has got more than 200 signatures for the re-opening of the centre. We will keep all local residents updated on our progress.

So watch this space, and hands off our community centre. - The Kingsway Community Centre Re-instatement Committee
