Hospitals may need to look towards multi-storey car parks

I write with reference to the article concerning the car park at the Leamington Re-Hab Hospital (Anger at hospital plans to charge for parking).

As a recent user of this hospital, I doubt that the increase in parking spaces will be adequate, particularly bearing in mind the increase in the number of beds.

I am also a regular user of the Warwick Hospital where the car parking is also completely inadequate and indeed has been at both hospitals for a number of years.

As we know from your reports over recent months, the number of houses in the area is to increase dramatically over the coming years. This will, therefore, mean an increase in traffic on our roads and a large increase in the total population, many of whom will require medical services.

One can only hope that the infrastructure is put in place to cope, ie improve our currently inadequate road system and hospital parking (amongst other things - eg schools, etc), if not prior to the expansion, at least alongside it. A start could be made now by turning the hospital surface car parks into multi-storey car parks so as to increase capacity.

With regards to charging at the hospital car parks, this is a guaranteed income source for the NHS Trust. The sick and vunerable needing hospital treatment have no choice other than to pay up. If they did have a choice it would be like the parking in Leamington where on street/car park charges have driven people to park further away from the centre where they don’t have to pay much to the detriment of the local traders. - David Row, via email.
