Jewel appears to have been polished

On December 2 I wrote that if the Jephson Gardens are to be called the Jewel in Leamington’s Crown, they must be properly maintained. The Sensory Garden, the Butterfly Garden and the borders along Willes Road and Newbold Terrace have not been maintained at all.

I am pleased to see that there has been a marked improvement, for which my thanks goes to those who have used their brains and those who have used their brains and muscles. I realise of course that so much neglect will probably take two years rather than six months to rectify fully.

If I may I will draw attention to two outstanding problems. Along Willes Road and Newbold Terrace the ivy is rampant. I know it is difficult to eradicate, but if it is allowed to spread it will inevitably give an impression of negligence. Then again, it seems to me that far more could be made of the conspicuous bed opposite the lodge on Willes Road. Without vast expense it might perhaps be turned into a springtime garden, possibly with a few conifers to keep it trim for the rest of the year.

Unfortunately I must end by taking to task the Highways Department of the County Council. On December 9, Alan Griffin wrote about the numerous buddelias sprouting out of the Victoria Bridge. Rightly, he emphasised that sooner rather than later, they will do enormous and expensive damage, and yet no steps have been taken to prevent it. That is plain irresponsible. - Mr R.P. Taylor, Leamington.
