Keep party politics out of police top job

I thank Cllr Weber for spreading our view, ‘it’s in the best interests of Warwickshire residents that the police service remains non-partisan’ (Postbag last week).

Unfortunately for Cllr Weber, a recent survey we conducted asked the public the simple question, “Do you think that an elected Police Commissioner should be truly independent of party politics?” revealed that the vast majority of the respondents also agreed and said yes.

His loathing of the Liberal Democrats then appears to get in the way of his logic when he clearly does not understand the difference between the police authority, made up of nine elected county councillors and eight lay members, and the single Police and Crime Commissioner that replaces it.

For Cllr Weber party politics suddenly moves to centre stage. Is this what the public want?

We would urge the public to consider seriously before voting whether they believe that an independent Police and Crime Commissioner, unfettered by political allegiances, would deliver the best police service for all of the residents and businesses in Warwickshire.

Let us hope that Cllr Weber can persuade the Labour Party candidate in his forthcoming letter to postal voters to correct an error made in his previous letter to selected voters and to acknowledge that, although he may wish to, he has no responsibility for sentencing and the criminal justice system. He should of course be aware of the clear separation between the police and the courts that exists in this country. - Cllr Alan Boad (Lib Dem) Crown Ward
