Let the people have their say

Claim and counter-claim, Warwick nimbies v Kenilworth nimbies, Gateway or no Gateway, update the green belt v keep the green belt sacred, MP v district councillors; we are faced with argument, claim and counter claim and it is all getting unpleasant.

As Steve Mc Fadden wrote last week the, central point at issue is the decision by Warwick District Council to plan for unfettered growth by planning for 12,300 houses rather than a predicted need for less than 6,000.

Apart from the council and developers who will profit from it, it seems hard to find anyone other than a handful of people to support the expansion that the district proposes. At the Guy Nelson Hall meeting (that WDC decided it couldn’t attend) there was not a single voice in favour. Sounds to me as though the council is not in listening mode.

Evidently we need to shout louder so, please Courier, you could play a role here and provide a voice for the people by setting up a single question survey in your papers and on your website and reporting on the result – along the lines of:-

‘Should the Warwick District local plan cater for its normal growth rate of 6,000 houses, or plan for a major expansion and 12,300 new houses?’

Then we should see what the people want – and that is surely what democracy is about.

I know where I and most residents of Bridge End stand on this, and it’s not for a plan that would eat our green belt, disfigure our landscapes, clutter our streets and add more poison to the air we breathe.

Come on Courier, we’d love it if you showed some leadership on this.
