Lights out will put our safety at risk

How dare the Conservative-led county council play with people’s safety and possibly lives by pressing ahead with this out-of-touch idea of turning off our street lights between the hours of 12am-5.30am which will create a criminals’ paradise and will leave the decent citizens of Warwickshire in fear of their safety in and out of their homes.

Along with many others, my work commitments means I have to walk home very late from work as I don’t drive and cannot afford to waste money on taxis so, if this proposal does go ahead, I will be forced to resign from my place of work as there is no way I will risk the consequences of walking home in darkness six nights per week!

The councillor spokeswoman claims “by introducing this measure we produce even more savings for the taxpayer.” I don’t see how this will happen with the increased level of crime that will prevail and people like me forced to claim benefits whilst searching for a new job, thus flooring her claim!

The councillor also claimed “There is a huge environmental benefit”... what planet is she living on?? I’m not so sure she will sound so enthusiastic when assaults, sexual assaults, burglaries start sky rocketing and we will all know where the blame will lie - and that will be at the council’s door!

I note at the time of 2006 when this odd idea first came along that no party had overall control of our council and obviously sense prevailed and this barmy idea was shelved.

Without boring people and listing the obvious dangers of this scribbled-on-the-back-of-a-matchbox proposal, the phrase “playing with fire” comes to mind and we all know what happens when people do that ...they get burnt. But on this occasion it’s the council striking the match and the Warwickshire citizens suffering the consequences!

The council now wants to commit to wasting £1.6 million on fitting equipment to our street lights to enable this sinister plan to go ahead. I predict after one year of the council depriving us of our safety and the cry for help from the public it will be forced to scrap its bonkers idea, thus wasting £1.6 million which could of been spent elsewhere, like reinstating bus chaperones to keep our children safe. But obviously safety is the last thing on the agenda for the Conservative-led council.

At the last general-election another party said that the Conservatives wanted to take us back to the 1980s...they were wrong it seems to be more like the Middle Ages !

I would like to suggest that the Courier starts a campaign to “save our safety”, something I’m sure the whole county will back ....minus the councillors. - Isobel Edwards, Northumberland Road, Leamington.
