No real saving in switching off lights

If there was some consultation, I must have missed it.

At a time of cuts to policing and other areas, switching the street lights off seems to me to be an ill thought out plan.

Twenty years or so ago, I lived in a quiet part of a Hertfordshire town where they used to switch off the street lights between 1am and 5am. If you happened to walk home between these hours it could be somewhat unnerving. Despite this, I never had any bad experiences, but then again, that was 20 years ago. Putting all our streets in darkness in 2012 at a time when cutting back on police numbers and police patrols seems like handing criminals a golden opportunity.

If the council feel they have to do some sort of switch off, then perhaps switching every second light out rather than all of them could be a consideration. However, I doubt the real savings per person in the community outweigh the benefits of leaving the lights on as they are now. - Stephen McFadden, Moorhill Road, Whitnash.
