Nothing to do with planning decision

It was interesting to read the letter from Mr Robertson (Postbag last week) in which he leapt on the bandwagon of those angered by the decision of the district council committee over the licence granted to the Shades nightclub.

The decision was based on the legal requirements which did not permit questions of morals or religion to be a consideration.

My wife who was the chairman of this committee [not the chair, which is a piece of furniture] appears to be the main target of the angry objectors and is being pilloried by highly humorous suggestions of a sex club in her home village.

Now along comes Mr Robertson accusing her of being involved in Mr Robertson’s “farmer” friend being refused permission to build a barn on his land. My wife does not sit on the planning committee and has no undue influence over them. When Mr Robertson’s friend appealed the decision to the Bristol centre where such cases are reviewed. The decision was that Mr Robertson’s friend was not a “bona fide farmer” but a man who owned a field and had a collection of old agricultural machinery.

An apology would be nice but we are not holding our breath. - Bernard Gallagher, via email.
