Plenty in Warwick to make a fun-packed day

The MP for Warwick and Leamington was quoted in last week’s Courier as saying that the towns need to promote itself. My reaction to that is mixed. Yes, we could do more to promote ourselves, apart from the castle, but if you visit the Tourist Information Office in Warwick, then all the help you could need is available (I can’t speak for Leamington).

Why am I so certain?

St Nicholas Brownies had a sleepover at half-term and the first task was to visit the Tourist Information Office to collect all the literature about Warwick. Back “home” the girls had a lengthy discussion about the next day’s agenda. There were only three stipulations from the leaders, we were booked into the Brethrens Kitchen for lunch, everywhere had to be within walking distance of St Nicholas church, and the castle was definately OFF the list - too dear apart from anything else. The girls only paid £15 for the entire event. They had a lot of fun comparing times, days, costs and accessibility, and the final list was: The Lord Leycester Hospital in the morning, and St Mary’s church after lunch, with a visit to the revamped museum in the Market Place if time allowed.

It all worked out - we were made very welcome at all of the venues. The people at the Lord Leycester gave the girls a very informative talk, and at St Mary’s we purchased a quiz and guide book for each girl, which they followed as they explored and probably learnt more about the church and town than most folk know. As we had a little time left before handing the girls back to their parents, we arranged for them to try their hands at brass rubbing, a new craft for most of them. It was a very full day, and immensely enjoyable for all. But I do take issue with the implication that Warwick and Leamington can be “done” in a day. I would say rather, one day for the castle, one for the rest of Warwick town, and one for Leamington if you want to go shopping - there isn’t much else to do there.

A huge thank you to all of the people at the Lord Leycester Hospital, the Brethrens Kitchen, (lunch was delicious and not expensive) and St Mary’s church for making us so welcome and giving the girls such a good time.

We do have a few vacancies if you know girls aged seven to nine who would like to join us, Just phone Chris Campbell on 497723 for details, and perhaps we could arrange to take the MP on an outing sometime? - Chris Campbell, Brownie Leader, via email.
