Prosecution is clearly the wrong course

I would like to comment on the ‘hurt’ that Leamington’s omission from a tourist guide has caused and Cllr Hammon’s comment that they have ‘missed the key to the whole area’ (Courier last week).

What exactly does he think the the key to the whole area is then or did he not state what it was because he doesn’t know? I have lived in Leamington my whole life and I love it but, if I am honest, I probably love it because it is a good base to live to go to other towns! If I want to go to a park I will probably choose Warwick over Victoria because they have more to offer for children with rides and horses.

If I was entertaining visitors to the area, I would bring them to Stratford for Shakespeare. For clothes shopping I would choose to go to Coventry for Primark and Matalan as Leamington has far too many pricey boutiques and not enough department stores or good value for money shops. There is an opportunity now to build something on the Fire Station and guess what ... it is going to be yet another supermarket!

Even Jephson Gardens does not hit the right note any more. Yes it has pretty flowers but what garden in a town doesn’t? What has happened to the fountains that used to resemble the crown, now they just dribble a bit of water out with no pattern or purpose? I have yet to walk past the bandstand in the Pump Rooms and see anything playing in it, so if anyone does actually play an instrument in it then please advertise it a bit more so I can come along and watch.

And, last but not least, Leamington cannot even put together a carnival/parade like Kenilworth and Warwick does, or are the town council going to keep fobbing us off with the Peace Festival every year? And the only reason that continues is because the council do not organise it, because that would involve a bit of hard work for them wouldn’t it!?

So what can we do to make it better? What about an animal feature like they used to have at the Jephsons with a bird aviary? What about investing in a tourist-attracting massive fountain/waterfall feature at the Jephsons? I am sure the response to that will have something to do with not enough money available. Well here’s an idea, how about not wasting any more money on ridiculous and pointless looking and expensive blue monument thingys outside the parish church because, guess what, no-one is going to come to Leamington to look at that are they! - Michelle Hart, Cobden Avenue, Leamington.
