Put arcade money to better use

First it was HS2, now it is the Clarendon Arcade. What links these projects? They both require a huge investment, which could be better spent adapting what already exists.

For example, the HS2 budget could be diverted into developing train technology that enables greater speed on existing lines, producing double-decker trains that increase capacity and raising bridges to enable their use. Similarly, the planning efforts for the Clarendon Arcade could be diverted into converting existing retail areas into more attractive units for both retailers and shoppers.

I have read that we need more retail space to compete with Stratford and Solihull. Across the town, we already have lots of retail space lying empty or even derelict! Views of the failed Regency Arcade and empty shops opposite the town hall are a disgrace and have been for a number of years. The retail development in Livery Street contains a number of empty and/or failed retail units.

How can the use of the existing retail space be encouraged? Are the business rates too great in the early years? Would removing traffic from that section of The Parade encourage use? If planning for the new shopping arcade is granted, will this area become even more deserted?

I don’t have the answers, I am just a Leamington resident and shopper. Yes, I would like to see a few more shops and attractive retail units; perhaps the capacity already exists but is not being utilised successfully. Oh, and, whatever happened to the plans to develop the area south of the river? - Paul Carter, Hopton Crofts, Leamington.
