Saddened by loss of much-needed venue

I am writing as a local musician in the community to express my sadness and disappointment concerning the closure of the old library in Leamington.

Every Thursday evening since January 2012, the old library has been home to the Spires Youth Orchestra, using the rehearsal space in the atrium. Over this duration of time the orchestra has had many special rehearsals, making use of the library’s natural and powerful acoustics which has helped to expand and enhance our sonority.

Not only has the old library welcomed and opened its doors to the orchestra, but also to many diverse groups ranging from chorus to steel pans and musicians/artists all over Warwickshire. All had made the building home for their creativity, imagination and inspiration.

The building is bursting with rich local heritage, unique architecture, valuable space and endless possibilities. No other library in the county can begin to match these qualities.

The current deprivation of the old library and its sui generis facilities, demonstrates the local lack of interest, investment and support in the performing arts for today’s young people and for future generations. - Holly May Gallan, via email.
