Security must always come first

Other correspondents are better placed to comment on the financial and environmental aspects of High Speed Rail, but crucial security issues seem to be being overlooked in some quarters.

In our July message to the Department of Transport, my friend, Cllr Marcus Lapsa, and I highlighted three possible dangers: technical/mechanical failure, vandalism and even possible terrorist attack on such a prestigious target.

There has been major loss of life in China with a train going far more slowly than HS2, while our railways are plagued with thefts of cable. And nobody can totally guarantee that terrorists would not attack.
