Sign petition to protect common

This emotive subject is stirring up considerable interest, particularly among those who use the old ‘Common’ an a regular basis.

There are still many people living locally who recall the original “open” survey in 2001 regarding how people used St Mary’s Lands and how they wanted it managed in the future. Those survey results were used in producing the St Mary’s Lands Regeneration Project and, as Warwick Racecourse already rented a large area for racing and the Golf Centre had a further large area for golf, the remaining central section of the land was left for both residents and visitors to freely enjoy.

That is probably why the Friends of St Mary’s Lands’ petition, to request that Warwick District Council honour its 2001 commitment, (repeated by Mr Elliott in 2005), to preserve the central area as open space for use by the public, has received so much support.

To show the popularity of the petition, with almost three weeks to go before it is concluded, over 450 have already signed the online petition and over 300 paper signatures have been received, with many more in the pipeline.

The request from the public is quite simple: please let us continue to use what little of the old “Common” is still available to us and, for those of you who have not yet signed the petition please do so, to let Warwick District Council, both elected members and officers, know your views.
