Take your lead from stance on HS2

In deciding to approve the application by Amara for a sex establishment licence, Warwick District Council’s regulatory committee seems to have followed the government’s planning principle of a ‘presumption in favour of development’.

According to the summary of the committee’s proceedings on the council’s website, the committee seems to have satisfied itself that the police did not object and that there were no residential premises in the immediate vicinity - ie next to or immediately opposite Amara. It then seems to have presumed in favour of the application. The strong views of many local residents about the negative imact of the application on the wider local area of Old Town apparently counted for little.

In great contrast, the council has taken a much more enlightened and strategic view on HS2. It has recognised the opposition of many local people and the negative impact HS2 would have on the whole area, and has been strong in its opposition to this misguided project. Quite rightly, no presumption in favour of development here.

Perhaps those on the council who lead the opposition to HS2 could have a word with members of the regulatory committee about the paramount importance of listening to the local community? - Mike Geddes, via email.
