Time to look at all possibilities

So Trilogy want to change the development on the old Foundry site to change from an office block to a major retailer. Once again this opens up the debate on whether the proposed Clarendon Arcade is the best option for Leamington.

Although, we do not know who the retailer will be, it is clear that they do not find Clarendon Arcade an attractive proposition. I wonder why? Perhaps it is that the arcade is a concept set in the past and wholly inappropriate for our town.

I sympathise with Bill Hunt as he is obliged to trot out the old argument that edge of town is bad and in town is good. I am afraid that he is flogging a dead horse. The fact is that shoppers like to go to places with free parking and easy access to the road network. An exceptional national brand on the edge of town near the M40 will be enormously attractive to locals as well as out of towners and can only be a good thing for the town.

It is time for an open and mature debate on the future of the town centre. we need to look at all the possibilities for rejuvenating the town.

At the moment the measure is about shopping and ignore those other factors that make a successful centre. The council is not prepared to engage in this discussion. Why? - John Drucquer, via email.
