Time to stop arguing and be constructive

I refer to the letter of Cllr Linda Bromley regarding the proposals for the rehousing of our local Sea Scouts, and specifically to her claim to represent constituents and her misrepresentation of essential “salient” facts that she is using at worst to mislead, at best to confuse.

It is encouraging however to see a grudging change in her direction and that of itself needs encouraging - but just how many voters actually sought her support before she went public?

The whole point of the Sea Scouts discussing the proposal with Myton Road and local residents has been, not surprisingly, to seek their views and have their questions, so as to get to a scheme that would be of best value and least offence to all involved. That is what the Sea Scouts are about. Being responsible. There is clearly a great deal of time and effort put into this part of the planning process already.

So where is our councillor going? She infers potential flooding of properties with the current proposal – it is above the flood plain contour, so that is no argument. She talks about retaining open space – Myton Fields is already an overflow car park. She infers a covenant on the use of the land – as a former Myton Road resident it is not hard to see that the original by the Earl of Warwick is long past its sell by date, and was probably set aside way back when the county council gave itself permission to allow the massive back-land housing. She talks of non consultation – she is staring public consultation in the face. She infers excessive height of the proposed new building which is actually designed lower than the neighbouring houses. Maybe better research is required prior to misleading public utterances?

The district council commissioned an extensive study of St Nicolas Park some time back from which the current concept for the Sea Scouts emerged. If the proposed site can be countered by a more appropriate location, then let’s quit the “anger and frustration” and misrepresentative line generated by the councillor and start serious looking, and serious planning. And let us now be constructive, support the parents and the Scouts themselves to see if the council might source the capital for instance through the Social Bond funding route of the big society, for a suitable site that is least contentious to all and beneficial to the many in the district. So let the light shine. - Richard Tilden Smith, Priory Mews, Northgate, Warwick.
