Vitriolic attack was uncalled for

The vitriol directed at Sir Dudley Smith by your correspondent Phil Reynolds (Postbag last week) because in a letter to your newspaper he declared his opposition to the Gay Marriage Bill, was offensive and uncalled for.

His reference to. Sir Dudley as Dud, and I quote: “something (sic) that no longer works or serves any useful function,” was particularly spiteful.

Sir Dudley took his defeat at the 1997 General Election, which ended almost 30 years as Tory MP for Warwick and Leamington, with dignity and good grace, qualities which Mr Reynolds, judging from the tone of his letter, would appear to lack.

Sir Dudley, who from my considerable experience as a local newshound was a sound and diligent constituency MP, is now 86, and not in the best of health. I for one wish him well. - Tom Swain, The Fairways, Leamington.
