Waste of money that will cause chaos

As the owner of a retail shop in the Crown Way shopping centre in Lillington, I was very concerned to learn that the county council plan to shut the whole of Crown Way down while road repairs are undertaken.

The plans call for Crown Way to be completely closed on two consecutive Sundays (October 2 and 9). They will also completely close the traffic island at the bottom of Crown Way by the Fourways Care Home. During the week there will be further major disruption through the length of Crown Way, with only partial vehicle access.

We fully expect a week of utter chaos, with very severe access problems for both customers and delivery drivers alike. The effects will be serious for all the shops in Crown Way and will be compounded by residents parking their vehicles in the shopping centre car park, due to their being no on-street parking.

During a discussion with a member of the council’s “programme and delivery team” I was astounded to be told that this work was necessary because of “numerous complaints about the poor quality of the road surface”.

At this point I, (metaphorically) took off ‘my shop keepers hat’, and put on my ‘council tax payer’s hat.’

Crown Way has a perfectly good road surface, and I cannot believe that any reasonable person could find reason to complain about it. However we all know of some pretty horrendous road surfaces elsewhere.

Do the council’s bureaucrats have any sense of priority, or indeed any regard for how tax-payers money is spent? It would appear not! Finally where are our councillors in this, since in theory at least they are supposed to represent the interests of the honest tax-payers. - David Brown, Sandown Close, Lillington.
